15 year old Betty Cherotich: A girl with no arms but with big dreams and great future

Betty Cherotich Kigai is a 15 year old girl born with no arms and one of her legs is short. Despite of her physical challenges, she has struggled hard to get education like any other child. Betty who uses her leg to write, eat, drink beverages is now in class seven and hopes to excel well in next year’s examination. She has a good handwriting and performs well in class.

Betty, who is always joyous, comes from a family of 11 children, five sons and six daughters. She is the sixth born child of Mr. William Ngeywo and Mrs. Teresa Kigai from Kaimugul sub location, Kopsiro division Mt. Elgon district.

When her mother was expectant, she went for ante-natal and she was told that the child she was expecting had no head and was advised to deliver in hospital. The mother was so stressed and always prayed to God to help her deliver a normal child. When she was seven months, she had a dream and in that dream she saw two children one with no arms and the other with no legs. Mrs.Teresa says that she experienced the same dream thrice but the third one was so clear and showed her a child with no arms being born.

Mrs. Teresa says that she was prepared psychologically and when she was due, she delivered normally at home and the child was exactly what she saw in her dreams with no arms. Her husband was shocked at first but they accepted her and treated her with the same care and love like other children.

When she was one year and a half, Betty begun eating with her leg with no help.

“I was so happy because I didn't know how I would have helped her, but God has great plans for her that's why He created her that way,” says her mother.

Betty started her schooling at Kipsikirok primary school up to standard three then she was transferred to Kaimugul primary school in Mt.Elgon where she is now. She says that she has no problem with other students because they play together, respect her and treats her well.

Although Betty can do other chores herself like eating and drinking beverages, she says she is unable to dress herself, bath, go to the toilet and perform other house hold chores but she thanks her parents, schoolmates, and sisters for understanding and helping her.

One of the major challenges she faces is not having shoes and she says that her parents cannot afford to buy her one. She always goes to school bare foot and that's the same feet she uses to write and eat.

“I will be grateful if someone buys for me shoes because when I write my books get dirt because of the dust and mud in my feet and walking long distance bear foot is a problem. I would like to finish school and join university so that I can take a law course. I would also like to help my parents and I will urge other children who are like me to work very hard so as to help their parents and other disabled children because disability is not inability,” says Betty.
