Bungoma Municipal Council has been issued with a stop order by the National Environment Management Authority- NEMA to stop damping wastes at Tuti main station in Bungoma south due to the mismanagement by the council members.
NEMA Manager Bungoma branch Mr. Jacob Asembo stated that the closure has lead to the early notice that was given to the Municipal council on 29 of April 2012 to improve on waste dumping site which was posing as a health hazard to the area residents but no single action has been taken till then after the end of the deadline.
“The office has also been receiving several complaints from the area residents claiming that the water springs that they do fetch water from has is being interfered by the waste materials from the site which may cause cholera outbreak,” he said.
“Therefore, we have sent notice to the Municipal Council office to stop dumping waste at the site till they start managing well the site hence, offer clean and healthy environment to the surrounding and whoever shall be found doing so shall be prosecuted,” he noted.
Asembo clearly clarified that the site has already has been fenced by the NEMA team and is under its watch and if the Municipal wants to receive it back then, has to sign new contract afresh. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
