Parents in Katakwa primary school in Teso North District had no reason to smile as five girls were found pregnant when Kenyans were happily celebrating Madaraka day yesterday.

Confirming the incident, the area acting chief Erineyo Majune revealed that the five girls confirmed pregnant are from class eight, five and two.

Majune said that the persons responsible are fellow classmates in standard eight, a boy in a secondary school and three happily known married men.

The administrator blamed the girls’ pregnancies to the school management committee for reluctance in reporting the issue in his office in time. He added that this is to make it easy for the culprits to be put behind bars.

The chief has however vowed to call for a meeting with parents of the girls to discuss the matter and also promised to pursue the matter for justice to be done. He also added that the culprits should be held responsible for what happened to the girls.

The sentiment was also echoed by Ang’urai South Ward councilor Moses Ote who condemned the school management team for giving the matter a deaf ear. Ote also expressed concern and suspected the management saying that some of them were involved.

The issue of the girls was also addressed by Maendeleo ya Wanawake chair lady Mary Okedi who asked the residents to team up and help the girl child continue with their education. The chair lady also appreciated them for the last year’s wonderful performance.

Teso North DC Ms. Josphine Onunga promised to probe up the issue and have the culprits brought on book and charged accordingly.
