Strategies for surviving through the internship period

Internships are a great ways to gain hands-on experience and get a better idea of the field one has chosen is a good fit.

During the induction period, interns are usually given plenty of advice about discipline, relationship and attitude at work places. These are important in their lives and contribute to their success long term career.

Working as an intern or a fulltime job is very different than being a student you will agree with me that those in the workplace care more about what you can do, than about how you are doing!

The working world is a competitive one and only those who "measure up" will be able to have a long and satisfying career. Let me share some tips about being successful at a job or attachment:

Being on time is essential: Being on time is the best way to know if someone is committed to the job and to the employer. Punctuality means being mindful of other people and their time. And being on time does not mean arriving at the exact start time of the day or the meeting or the appointment. ...instead, it means being there 15 minutes earlier. Try to embrace this, you will be amazed on how it will make you be at peace and always ready at all times having finished your duties. No one will be on your head no loggerheads at all.

No task is too small: Showing the employer that you are cheerfully willing to accept ANY and ALL assignments is a key factor in job success – even if they are things you think are “beneath” your education. It proves that you are ready to assist and to contribute wherever you can and that the needs of the company are important to you. If you care just a little then you do not care at all. Give your all self to your duty.

Never complain: Negative attitudes are a turn-off for everyone; complaints about the work schedule, fatigue, heat, fellow workers, the food, the customers, the patients, the supervisor, etc only add to everyone’s discomfort and serve no useful purpose. Instead, if there are problems fix them and understand that no place will be perfect!  Unless your human rights and safety are being violated, show that you are capable of handling life's normal frustrations in a calm and adult manner. Be composed, it makes a lot of difference.

Never have nothing to do:  If there happens to be nothing in your job to do at the moment, then ask the supervisor how you can help others or take on a new task.  This attitude is one always associated with the strong employee who wants to get ahead. Do not fix yourself in other peoples program besides do not allow someone to get into your program when they have nothing to do to improve your situation ore help you. Keep yourself busy. An idle mind is the workshop of the devil. Idle employees make a very inactive unstable organization which can collapse anytime.

Work well with others:  The emphasis on being a "team-player" is most important even if you do ‘not like’ your fellow-workers or whether you want them as your friends....these considerations do not matter! The adult world expects people to work together and to put personal biases or preferences aside. United you shall stand divided you will fall. Effective teamwork results in the most ever successful projects.

Be loyal: Your number one priority at all times should be what is best for the company or organization, and not what is best for me. Truth and faithfulness should be the guiding tools in your day to day’s undertakings as an employee. Be faithful, l if it will cost your life when known, then it will cost the whole organization’s life if not known; you included.

Keep growing: At all times, find ways to continue to upgrade your knowledge and skills in your chosen occupation.  Read relevant material in books and on the internet, join a professional association, or check if there are evening courses you can take at the college/university nearby. Commit to becoming the most informed, up-to-date person in your field. This process is a life-long one! With that you will always produce the best that will serve the required purpose in complete.

For sure, the workplace presents many new difficulties, but it also presents superb opportunities to be able to bring your intellect to the larger world.

Now is the time to drop any notion of yourself as being dependent or vulnerable or rail or weak.....Now is the time to emerge as the strong and capable employee that you are!
