Seven suspects who were being confined at the Bungoma police cells escaped Thursday night as blame is directed to the officers who were on duty when the incident occurred.

The escapees were being confined there waiting to be taken to court for confirmation of charges leveled against them, as they were being accused of different crimes.

Speaking to the press, the Deputy PPO from western province Mr. Gerald Mbaabu said that the seven escaped Thursday night but two of the escapees have already been arrested.

“Seven suspects that were being confined at the Bungoma police cells escaped last night after which one of them was immediately arrested, another one was arrested this morning in chwele and the rest are still at large” said Mr. Mbaabu.

Mr. Mbabu said that the two who were arrested are Timothy Kituyi Kibaba and Daniel Chere Kirui while those who are still at large are: Felix Semenjero, Rodgers Wanyonyi, Humphrey Wambulwa Wafula, Fredrick Onyango Adero and David Juma Simiyu adding that the police have links to their whereabouts and it won’t be long before they are arrested.

He confirmed that the escapees had just walked out of their cells and no one was hurt during their escape adding that they were conducting investigations to establish how they managed to escape with a police officer on duty.

“They just walked out of their cells but no one was injured during their escape but we have began our investigations to establish how they managed to escape with an officer on duty and if he is found to have neglected his duties he will be disciplined” he added.

However, the police officer revealed that they have links about them adding that they are mobilizing all officers to hunt them down and urged the public to report to the police if they have any information about them.

Also present was the deputy PCIO Mr. Musa Yego and the Bungoma OCPD Mr. Amos Cheboi who said that those who escaped  will be charged for escaping from police custody which he said is punishable with three years in prison.
