The Interim Elections and Boundaries Commission- IEBC has settled on September 17, 2012 as the date to hold by elections in Ndhiwa, Kangema and Kajiado North constituencies.
The commission has further revealed that seven civic wards are scheduled to hold mini elections on the same date.
The announcement comes days after the speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende issued writs declaring the seats vacant.
On July 6, President Kibaki assented the Miscellaneous Amendment Act 2012; which factored the amended of the provisions of the Elections Act, giving the speaker of the national assembly the green light to go ahead and declare the seats vacant, hence the by election.
The Kangema seat fell vacant after area MP John Michuki died in February, whereas Kajiado North and Ndhiwa seats fell vacant after its MPs George Saitoti and Orwa Ojode perished on June 10, in a helicopter crash in Ngong’s Kibiku area.
IEBC had until October 2012, to conduct the by elections as per the constitutional provisions. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
