Sh 80 Million to be used to expand the Sisenye Irrigation Scheme in Bunyala District

The ministry of Agriculture through National Irrigation Board funds has set aside Sh.80 million for the expansion and completion of Sisenye irrigation scheme in Bunyala District which is to be upgraded from 50 hectares to 200 hectares.

District Agricultural officer Mr. Michael Wekesa stated that the project shall have main lining and secondary canal which shall be about 4.75km and an installation of four pumps to cover about 1.2km.

The particular crops proposed by farmers were Sorghum, Maize, Green grams, and Horticulture crops.

Speaking during the launching of Sisenye Irrigation Scheme Wekesa he said the project was fully approved by the government to improve the life standard of the area residents which was also one of the Njaa Marufuku programs.

He further added that the ministry shall link farmers to Kenya seeds, Kenya bureau to ensure that farmers grow satisfied seeds for quality growth.

Head of National irrigation Board Mr. Daniel Atula said disclosed that Bunyala as district has benefitted a lot in irrigation therefore, it is upon farmers to use the opportunity to participate fully in various modern farming methods.

Western Regional Manager National Irrigation Board Mr. Lagat Kiplagat added that his Organization shall also link with the Ministry of Agriculture to fund in inputs and build capacity because through Agricultural Farmers Corporation, AFC famers shall be needed to learn new projects that go hand in hand with irrigation policies.

The NIB has at the moment has a target to cover over 200,000 hectares of land for irrigation in western region out of whole 1.2 million hectares of land as one of the plans under the vision 2030Tanui said.

The area MP Ababu Namwamba being the guest of honor said through agricultural farmers association farmers shall in position to borrow loans through easy means disclosing that the organization shall soon open its office in Busia county specifically Port victoria to serve the increasing number of loan applicants, therefore urged farmer to use the opportunity fully.

Namwamba also asked the Sisenye residents to focus on developments instead of gimmicking them because the district has a lot to produce for the Busia County.
