School heads in Nandi South district have received letters from their DEO threatening them to interdiction on allegations that they walked out of meeting before the officer addressed them.

 Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary from the district Stephen Misoi was on Friday prompted to hold talks with the primary heads and teachers who visited his office in Kapsabet with the letters.

Misoi said that 50 letters were written by the District Education officer (DEO) Abel Nyamwaya to school heads and some teachers demanding that they “apologise in writing why they should not be interdicted.”

In the letters dated April 12, it was written that the said teachers during the meeting at Aldai Girls high school “walked out before commencement of meeting” convened by Nyamwaya.

Through the KNUT official, the heads and teachers said that they turned up at the meeting that was held but were kept waiting up to late in the afternoon when they dispersed after Nyamwaya failed to arrive.

The move by Nyamwaya has led to furious reactions from the teachers who have vowed to paralyze education in the district when school opens for second term until the officer is transferred.

Misoi who was one of the speakers during the meeting unveiled that Nyamwaya did not arrive at the venue on time.

“Teachers arrived at 8 o’clock in the morning and waited for the officer up to late in the afternoon when we decided to leave since Nyamwaya had not turned up and there was no communication from him,” Misoi said.

According to Misoi, the officer has been inciting parents against teachers while also harassing and intimidating them for no adequate reason.

“When KCPE results were released last year, Nyamwaya paraded some teachers and accused them of the low performance in some schools,” he said.

Contacted for comment, Nyamwaya accepted that he wrote letters to the teachers saying that they had violated his directives and must therefore, apologise.

Nyamwaya said, “The KNUT official misled teachers into leaving the meeting before I arrived.”

He said that the step he took in writing the letters was in order and dared teachers to neglect apologizing and face dire consequences.

Misoi however, said that the ministry of education should step in and investigate conduct of the officer and ensure that he is transferred or disciplined before the school reopens for second term.
