As schools break for the April holidays pupils of Nambalai Primary School in Matete had reasons to smile following an impromptu visit by students from a British University who presented them  with over 360 pairs of shoes and other learning materials over the weekend.

The students Lorene Mashaud and Kim Weatherspoon from John Hopkins University, said they took the philanthropic gesture following media exposures whereby West FM through our website highlighted a myriad of problems facing the school, in which a large number of the pupils were infested with jiggers besides learning in a poor community.

The duo pledged that the gesture was only a precursor of good things to come adding that their major intention was to ensure that pupils from the school accessed education without any encumbrances. They also donated sanitary towels to girl pupils.

The school’s head teacher Selpher Wetiva commended the students for their kind gesture and called on them to continue with their philanthropic activities.

Towards the end of last year another philanthropic  Jeff Whiten from America after reading the story on this page he flew into the country and toured the school where he pledged to give Sh90 million for construction of classrooms and other amenities.

The head teacher revealed that efforts to secure a title deed were at an advanced stage to enable the philanthropist release the funds.

The school has been faced with a cute class room shortage with cases of pupils of different classes sharing a room.

With enrolment up to class six, the school has only two government teachers who are the head teacher and her deputy Erastus Ombwaso. The over 300 pupils are served by only two toilets.
