The nine aliens arrested in Kapsabet.

Nine Somali nationals appeared in Kapsabet law court where they have been charged of entering the country unlawfully without knowledge of the immigration office contrary to Kenyan Citizenship Act of 2011.

Awalwe Abdullahi, Sadar Hassan, Hassan Hussein Mohammed, Halima Mohammed, Abdi Mohammed, Hadhara Ahmed, Bazra Nur Farah, Farah Nur Farah and Osman Mahud pleaded guilty before senior magistrate Beatrice Musiria.

The court heard that on May 5, the nine were intercepted by police while being ferried in a van from Kakamega with their destination being Nairobi.

The nine who spoke through an interpreter accepted that they boarded a vehicle in Bungoma after requesting van driver to carry them.

They jointly said that they had fled from their war torn Somalia to seek security in Kenya.

Through their translator, they said, “We feared for our lives in Somalia and we came to kenya where there is peace.”

The case will be mentioned on Friday, 11 at the same court.

On Monday, the nine Somali nationals were brought before Kapsabet law court, but charges could not be read in the morning after it became evident that the nine accused could not communicate in English or Kiswahili.

However, a translator later arrived and assisted the court in translation in which all the nine pleaded guilty to their charges.

The court was moved to a general laughter when the accused communicated with the translator in their foreign language that could not be understood by the rest of the listeners.

The nine had been intercepted and arrested by police last week on Saturday at Chepsonoi trading centre in Nandi Central district.

Kapsabet OCPD Nelson Okioga and DCIO Samson Thoya said that the nine Somali nationals were among others of unknown number who managed to escape in another unidentified van.

Okioga said that documents that the foreigners were found in possession indicated that they were heading to Nairobi on unclear mission.

Other documents confiscated by police also indicated that they had used a plane from Mogadishu in Somalia to Entebbe in Uganda before arriving at Kakamega on unclear means.

Four valid visas from Uganda and a Somali electronic national identity card were confiscated from the nine foreigners.
