Kakamega Municipal Council has set side Sh.20 million towards the rehabilitation of Bukhungu stadium.

Kakamega Mayor Mathias Shichele said  that work on one of the country’s oldest sports facilities would be begin before the end of the week after council concluded awarding the contractor the approval to commence the repairs.

The council will host this year’s edition of the annual Kenya inter-municipalities sports and cultural association (kimsca) games later in august and the stadium was identified as a key venue for the sports extravaganza.

Shichele said the council plans to spend Sh.6 million to construct sheds around the terraces with the remaining amount going towards construction of a perimeter fence, reconstruction of the dilapidated interior fence, drainage and the construction of the lavatories and gates.

A number of commercial entities operating in the town, including Yako supermarket, Tuskys, Westways laboratories, Midland emporium, Butali Sugar  and Masinde Muliro University (Mmust) have confirmed their intend to partner with the council to give the stadium a phase lift.

Establishment of a perimeter fence around the stadium and improvement of the drainage system will give the stadium a major boost in terms of hosting key premier league matches as well.

At present, local premier leagues side Western Stima FC has been losing revenue in form of gate collection as fans access the stadium through the porous perimeter fence.

Occasionally, the club is force to shift her home league matches to either Mumias Sports, particularly those to be televised by pay television DSTV.
