A 17 year old girl who was working as a house help in Shimo La Tewa within Kitale town is being held by administrators in Saboti location of Trans Nzoia West district for selling her three weeks old baby girl at Sh3, 000 only.

Saboti location Chief Mr. Protus Sifuna confirmed that the girl admitted to having sold the baby in liaison with a midwife identified as Ruth Nangendo who assisted her during delivery.

"The girl herself admitted to us that they had sold the child at Ksh3, 000 of which the midwife took a half of the money as her share for having brokered the deal," the chief told West FM.

The midwife is said to have sold the idea to the teenage girl after she hinted to her that she needed money to travel to their home in Saboti after her boss who stays in Nairobi failed to pay her the salary she had worked for.

The girl is said to have revealed to the midwife that the boy who impregnated her was not ready to take responsibility of the child and her parents were poor and living in abject poverty and could not enable them to bring up an extra child and furthermore her father was harsh and could not hear anything of that kind.

"After the girl failed to get fare to take her home the midwife told her that she had a way out because there was a barren woman in the neighborhood who could accept to buy the child," Wechuli said.

The administrator further revealed that the girl has now been handed over to officers in charge of children and gender in Kitale and the police were also investigating the matter to arrest the midwife and the woman who bought the child.

Administrators and police had had a tip-off from the members of the public in her home village of Sarora who raised alarm wanting to know what happened to the pregnancy the girl had before she left the home sometimes back and thus she admitted that she had sold the child in Shimo La tewa.
