Speaking while addressing journalists in Kitale, the legislator said that some politicians who are aspiring to vie for the parliamentary seat have chosen to use propaganda and baseless rumors to earn support from the voters despite what the rumors might result to. Without mentioning names, Kapondi who is also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Security said that the rumor mongers had in the recent past spread rumors that the constituency Development Fund -CDF vehicle had been impounded in Busia with some firearms yet the vehicle had been taken for service in a garage in Nairobi. He added that the politicians did not stop there, but went ahead to say that he had later on been arrested with four guns in his vehicle in Eldoret yet there was nothing of that nature hence he said the trend might spark clashes in the area that has been enjoying peace for the last four years since he was elected to parliament. Kapondi said the baseless rumors had caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety and tension among the residents who are not ready to go back to the previous scenarios of violence and clashes that saw lives and property lost while tens of hundreds of people were displaced from their homes and some are still living in camps. "I am calling upon security officers in Mt Elgon to thoroughly investigate these rumors and establish their source so that the people behind them are brought to book and prosecuted according to the law," Kapondi told journalists. He said that the government should be keen about the history of the area that had been hit by the infamous Sabaot Land Defense Force -SLDF among other clashes so that it does not sit back and watch the area slip back to a similar situation that was witnessed a few years back due to such politicians. "In the last four years residents of Mt Elgon Constituency have enjoyed a peaceful environment and each of them is not concerned with anybody's affairs because everybody is busy concentrating on development projects to improve their economic base and therefore we should not let politicians who have no agenda to provoke the situation back into clashes that were witnessed before. Residents were urged to shun such politicians who have no agenda and they should not be given audience to enhance their selfish political agenda. Since he was elected to parliament Kapondi has never been in good terms with his predecessor John Serut whom they are said to have differed on many aspects and parted ways over the Chepyuk Settlement Scheme that saw the birth of SLDF and its eventual annihilation by the joint military force early 2008. |
